Beloved

New York: Knopf, 1987. Octavo, white cloth boards with silver lettering and tombstone stamp to the front board, unclipped dust jacket with lightest toning. Item #10060

First edition of Morrison's tour-de-force, inspired by the true story of a runaway slave who killed her daughter rather than see her recaptured, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1988. "Simple: she was squatting in the garden and when she saw them coming and recognized schoolteacher's hat, she heard wings. Little hummingbirds stuck their needle beaks right through her headcloth into her hair and beat their wings. And if she thought anything, it was No. No. Nono. Nonono. Simple. She just flew." Morrison would win the Nobel Prize five years later. A fine copy, signed by Morrison on the title page.
