The Works of H. Fielding

London: J.M. Dent and Company, 1893. Railton, Herbert; Wheeler, E.J. Twelve small octavo volumes, contemporary three-quarter maroon morocco gilt, raised bands, flowered paper boards and endpapers. Top edges gilt. Light shelfwear to bindings, some bumped corners. Oxford bookseller's tickets. Item #10077

Charming nineteenth-century set of Fielding's works, illustrated by Herbert Railton and E.J. Wheeler, bound with an unusual bird motif on the spines. This collection includes Joseph Andrews, Jonathan Wild, Amelia, and Fielding's most influential novel, Tom Jones: "Man is the highest subject (unless on very extraordinary occasions indeed) which presents itself to the pen of our historian, or of our poet; and, in relating his actions, great care is to be taken that we do not exceed the capacity of the agent we describe." A very good set.
