The Thirteenth Woman and Other Stories (Living Hand 5)

[New York]: Living Hand, [1976]. Octavo, original pale blue printed wrappers with flaps. Light toning and a few spots to wrappers, foxing to page edges only. Item #10087

First edition of the first collection by Davis, number 158 of 500 copies. In these unsettling short stories, Davis introduces the deadpan voice and formal ingenuity that would become her trademark in the decades to follow: "A man in our town is both a dog and its master." This copy inscribed on the first leaf: "For Janey and Mark -- our fellow country-men -- Love, Lydia." The author photograph is a passport snapshot of the young Davis. Unusual, early, cool, in near-fine condition.

Price: $900.00
