Hell's Pavement (aka Analogue Men) is a dystopian science fiction novel by Damon Knight which delves into a society where asocial behavior is mitigated using "analogues"-mental imprints of authoritative figures preventing violent or harmful intentions. Set in a 22nd-century fragmented United States, the story unfolds in regions where societal norms are upheld by these analogues to benefit the ruling class. At its heart is Arthur Bass, an "immune" resistant to the analogue treatment, who joins a covert group aiming to dismantle the system. This debut novel by Knight, first introduced in Astounding Science Fiction as "The Analogues" and subsequently as parts in Thrilling Wonder Stories, was first published in book form as a Lion paperback original. In 1962, it was reissued as Analogue Men, but by 1971, it reverted to its original title.
